MDC XT22HRT Off-Grid Extreme: All New Flagship from MDC USA

The MDC XT22HRT Off-Grid Extreme is MDC’s next biggest thing, literally. It is the largest travel trailer MDC has ever built for the U.S., the new 22-foot flagship of the Off-Grid Extreme line, and it arrives in early 2027. It is built for couples who want to travel for long periods of time to places like Alaska, Baja, or across the country visiting every national park. It won’t limit you on power or on comfort.

Who the MDC XT22HRT Is Built For

The newest and largest travel trailer from MDC USA is built for couples or solo travelers that want to extend their trips past just a quick weekend. The floorplan, construction and design is perfect for longer trips, on road and off-road.

It comes with plenty of power with 1,500 amp hours of lithium, tons of solar charging power with up to 2,000 watts total. But it also has the appliances that you need to be comfortable on the road. Dual Truma Aventa air conditioners. Dual Truma VarioHeat furnaces. 3-burner stove top and oven. And lastly, a private bedroom in the front of the unit with a queen bed.

What Stands Out On The MDC XT22HRT

Three rooms instead of one big one

Most trailers this size are one open floorplan. The MDC XT22HRT uses two interior doors to split it into three separate zones.

At the back is the living room: a wraparound club lounge in black quilted upholstery around a dinette table, with windows on three sides. It converts into a third bed when you need it. Next to it is the kitchen, with a Furrion three-burner range and oven, a microwave, a 10 cubic foot Norcold 12V fridge, and waterfall countertops with a black washboard sink.

In the middle is the bathroom. It is a dry bath, which means the shower is its own stall with a glass door, separate from the Thetford cassette toilet and the vanity.

Up front, behind its own door, is the bedroom: a queen island bed (79 by 58 inches) you can walk around, with a TV and big windows on both sides.

A shower that does not feel like an RV shower

If you have only used a wet bath, the kind where the whole room gets soaked when you shower, this is an upgrade you will love having in the mornings. The XT22HRT’s shower is oversized for a trailer, with hot and cold water from a Truma AquaGo instant water heater.

The toilet is a cassette type. The separate tank slides out through an exterior door so you can empty it at any vault toilet or dump station, no sewer hookup needed. If you are deciding between a cassette and a conventional black tank, our post on which off-grid toilet is right for you walks through both.

There is also a hot and cold outdoor shower with its own wall-mounted shower tent, for rinsing off after a dusty day before you come inside.

Power and water overkill

This is where the XT22HRT beats everything MDC has built before.

  • 1,500 amp hours of Renogy lithium battery. That is about 19 kilowatt hours of stored power. It runs the fridges, lights, fans, TVs and water pump for days, and an air conditioner through a hot afternoon, without the need for a generator.
  • 1,400 watts of rooftop solar across eight panels. On a good sunny day that puts back roughly a third of the battery. There are inputs on the exterior for up to 600 more watts of portable panels if you park in the shade, for up to 2,000 watts total.
  • Two 3,000 watt inverters, one for the bedroom zone and one for living, so the coffee maker and the hair dryer are not fighting over one outlet.
  • 93 gallons of fresh water in three 31-gallon tanks, plus a 31-gallon gray tank. That is more than double the MDC XT19HRT’s 42 gallons.

The Renogy ONE Core monitor shows all of it on one screen and on your phone. A regular 22-foot travel trailer is built to plug in at a campground every night. This one is built so you can get off-grid and away from the campgrounds.

Heat and cooling by zone

There are two Truma Aventa Eco air conditioners (13,500 BTU each) and two Truma VarioHeat furnaces (11,500 BTU each), one pair for the bedroom and one for the living area. Cool only the room you are in on a hot afternoon. Keep the bedroom warm on a cold night without heating the whole trailer.

The cold weather package backs that up with tank heating pads, insulated water lines, a heated wet bay, a self-heating battery and dual pane windows.

Exterior Entertainment Hub On The MDC XT22HRT

Swing open the large hatch on the door side and there is a 43-inch Jensen smart TV, a Dometic 60-liter fridge, a Fusion marine stereo with six-inch speakers, a phone charging dock, HDMI and RCA inputs, and LED mood lighting. It is the first time MDC has put one on an Off-Grid Extreme model.

Pair it with the slide-out stainless steel outdoor kitchen (Thetford 3-burner cooktop, sink with hot and cold water), the fridge slide, the wall-mounted table, and the 19’ awning. Then add the full annex. It is a zip-on room with a floor, walls and roof that fits under the awning, and it gives you a covered outdoor room 22 feet long and 7 and a half feet deep.

Have a game day tailgate anywhere. Movie night with the grandkids. Dinner with the family. This is the part of camp that becomes everyone’s hang out spot.

Built on the same Off-Grid Extreme foundations

OGE stands for Off-Grid Extreme, MDC’s top build for remote, rough-road camping. Under the MDC XT22HRT is the same recipe that makes the rest of the line work off pavement:

  • X-TRACK independent coil spring suspension, tandem, with two heavy-duty TOUGH TRAX shocks per side. Independent means each wheel moves on its own, so the trailer soaks up washboard and ruts instead of passing them to your cabinets.
  • Cruisemaster DO45 articulating hitch, a step up from the DO35 on smaller MDCs because of the extra weight. It pivots so the trailer and truck can twist over uneven ground without binding.
  • Hot-dipped galvanized steel chassis (6 by 2 inch rails) with MDC’s lifetime chassis and A-frame warranty, 265/75R16 mud-terrain tires on 16-inch alloy wheels, and a full-size spare on the rear.
  • Tucson electronic stability control that brakes the trailer to settle sway, 12-inch electric brakes, four drop-down stabilizer legs and a wireless rear view camera.
  • A three-bay utility box up front with mud flaps that face forward to take the rocks your tires throw.

What You Should Know Before You Buy

You’ll need a big truck. The MDC XT22HRT weighs about 7,935 pounds empty and is rated for 9,920 pounds fully loaded, with about 780 pounds on the hitch. That is three quarter ton territory or bigger (F-250, Silverado 2500HD, Ram 2500), and if you plan to tow it far, we lean toward a diesel. A half ton (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) is not the right match, even if the paper rating says it might be. Our tow vehicle guide walks through the math.

It is long. It measures 29 feet 8 inches from the hitch to the spare, 7 feet 9 inches wide, and 10 feet 4 inches tall to the top of the air conditioners. It goes a long way down rough roads, but it will not fit every tight forest-service turnaround or in most garages.

It sleeps two plus one. The queen bed is for two, and the lounge converts for one more. If you camp with three or four kids, look at a family layout instead.

It is new. First units reach the U.S. in early 2027. If you need a trailer soon, you may want to look at other options in the MDC lineup.

How the XT22HRT Compares to the XT19HRT

The MDC XT19HRT has been MDC USA’s most popular Off-Grid Extreme model, and the XT22HRT takes that idea further.

XT19HRT XT22HRT
Empty weight 6,470 lbs about 7,935 lbs
Fully loaded rating 7,716 lbs 9,920 lbs
Battery 800 amp hours 1,500 amp hours
Solar 1,225 watts 1,400 watts
Fresh water 42 gallons 93 gallons
Outdoor Entertainment Hub no yes

If you already own a three quarter ton and the XT19HRT feels a little tight for long trips, the XT22HRT is the step up. If you want most of the capability in a lighter package, the XT19HRT is still a great trailer, and you do not have to wait for 2027 to get one. Our MDC model comparison lays out the whole lineup side by side.
